Cloud computing, cloud storage, and cloud computing are all terms you may have heard. What exactly is the cloud?
Essentially, the cloud is the Internet – or more specifically, everything you can access remotely via the Internet. Cloud storage means that something is stored on Internet servers instead of your computer’s hard drive.
“The cloud” originated as a slang term in the tech industry. During the early days of the Internet, technical diagrams often depicted servers and networking infrastructure as clouds. People began talking about moving to “the cloud” when more computing processes moved to this servers-and-infrastructure part of the Internet as a way of expressing where the processing was happening. In today’s world, “the cloud” has become a widely accepted term.
Servers and databases that run over the Internet are referred to as “the cloud”. All over the world, cloud servers are located in data centers. Cloud computing eliminates the need for users and companies to manage physical servers or to install software on their own computers.
Cloud computing and storage allows users to access the same files and applications from almost any device since they are stored and computed on servers rather than locally on devices. This is why users can log into their social media accounts on a new phone after their old one breaks without any worry. They will still find all their old photos, videos, and conversations intact. Cloud email providers like Gmail and Microsoft Office 365, as well as cloud storage providers like Dropbox and Google Drive work the same way.
With cloud computing, businesses can reduce their IT costs and overhead, since they no longer have to update and maintain their own servers. Smaller businesses that may not have been able to afford their own internal infrastructure can now outsource their infrastructure needs affordably via the cloud. Having access to the same files and applications anywhere makes it easier for companies to operate internationally.
How does the cloud work?
Virtualization is a technology that makes cloud computing possible. By using virtualization, a computer can be simulated, digital-only, and behave as if it were a physical one. This type of computer is known as a virtual machine. Despite being on the same host machine, virtual machines on the same host are sandboxed from one another, so they do not interact with one another and do not see each other’s files or applications even though they are physically connected.
The hardware hosting virtual machines is also more efficient. A data center can serve many organizations by running many virtual machines at the same time. Consequently, cloud providers can offer their servers to far more customers at once than otherwise, and at a lower cost.
Even if individual servers fail, cloud servers should remain online and accessible. Most cloud vendors back up their services across multiple machines and regions.
Regardless of the device being used, users connect to cloud services over the Internet – that is, through many interconnected networks – either through a browser or through an app.
